BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1959, Sarah was trained initially trained as a Graphic Designer in Johannesburg, and worked in Advertising during the wonderful period where Graphic Designers drew for their living. This changed abruptly in the late 1980's when the computer entered the studio and took away all the pencils. Lured by the dot com boom she endured the dot com crash and realising that a life lived without passion was no life at all. She left the existence of an IT Project Manager to pursue her creative dream in Nelson in 2003. She was awarded a scholarship by The Learning Connexion in Wellington, and completed her Art and Creativity diploma in 2007.

Having had a lifelong fascination with the human face Sarah enjoys capturing subtleties of expression and character. She works in conte pastel, acrylics and oils. Her pastel style follows the Classical tradition of terracotta and white chalk on a neutral ground.

Sarah draws portraits at the Nelson Market on Saturday mornings and her studio is at the Refinery Artspace on Halifax Street, where she is Artist in Residence. Visitors are welcome, please call first. She works from life, completing a conte pastel drawing in 20 – 40 minutes, or from photographs either taken by herself or provided for her.

She also paints sketch portraits in acrylic and oil, as well as fully developed oil portraits. See Prices page for details.

Sarah also teaches drawing, creativity and painting. (see Art Classes)
